We Need to Install More EV Chargers, but Where?

President Joe Biden has announced a plan to spend $174 billion to make it easier for Americans to choose electric vehicles. This plan includes installing 500,000 electrical vehicle charging stations by 2030. With such a large number of charger installs, it is hard to imagine where they will all go.

An assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering at Michigan State University, Mehrnaz Ghamami, gives his advice after working on the plan for Michigan’s charging network.

The resulting charging maps imagine a network of chargers splayed at roughly even intervals across the state, not just in areas where road traffic or EV adoption are already high.
