Local Communities Decide How to Charge For Public EV Stations

Community leaders in Carson City, Nevada are developing plans for policies and payment for their city owned EV charging stations. The fee schedule applies to charging stations either owned by the city or ones that are on city owned land that may be operated by a private vendor or utility company. The city owns both level 2 and level 3 charging stations. The level 2 fee schedule is $1 for the first four hours of use and an additional $5 for any hours after that. Level 3 charger has a similar loitering fee. Level 3 charging stations in Carson City charge $4 for the first two hours and $10 for every hour past the initial two hours.

Small communities and municipalities are making efforts to ensure their residents have access to EV charging stations. There are many different ways town leaders can go about installing public access EV charging. One of the most popular options is to make areas of street parking designated for EV charging. There may also be charging stations installed at municipal buildings like libraries, police stations and public parks. Municipalities can even implement fleet electrification with their municipal fleets to further promote sustainable energy for their community.

Cities and towns across the country are installing public access EV charging stations for residential neighborhoods. In Hoboken, NJ, the city council developed a plan to have EV charging stations along street parking due to the number of homes that don’t have off-street parking. A common solution for street EV charging stations is having parking passes for EV drivers to keep their car in the designated EV charging parking spots. These spots are typically first come, first served.
